This article is the first article in a series of articles that I will write on the topic of weight loss. Read on and get educated about ideal body weight before embarking on a weight loss regime.

What is Body Mass Index or BMI

Body Mass Index is also called BMI. It is a proven method to assess whether you are obese or not. BMI is calculated by dividing you weight in Kg by square of your height in meters. Suppose your weight is 85 Kg and your height is 1.76 Meter (176 Cm). Then your BMI will be 85 divided by 3.0976. This is equal to 27.44. So your BMI is 27.44. This is considered Overweight by WHO standards. Given below is the BMI Indicator so that you can find out your BMI easily.

Category BMI Range (Kg/M2) BMI Prime
Very Severely Underweight Less than 15 Less than 0.60
Severely Underweight From 15.0 to 16.0 From 0.60 to 0.64
Underweight From 16 to 18.50 From 0.64 to 0.74
Normal Healthy Weight From 18.5 to 25 From 0.74 to 1.0
Overweight From 25 to 30 From 1.0 to 1.20
Obese Class I (Moderately Obese) From 30 to 35 From 1.20 to 1.40
Obese Class II (Severely Obese) From 35 to 40 From 1.40 to 1.60
Obese Class III (Very Severely Obese) Above 40 Above 1.60

There is some problems with BMI being very accurate because it does not take into consideration your frame size, muscularity and proportion of fat in the body. As one grows older the bone density reduces. In case of athletes proportion of muscle is much higher. So in such cases the BMI method may not be very accurate. But by and large it is still a very good indicator of body weight. So before starting on a crash diet calculate your BMI to understand the extent of overweight.

But remember that a low body fat percentage is also not good for health. Some body fat is required for vital functions. The idea is to maintain a healthy body fat percentage. Ideal body fat percentage changes with age. It is also different for men and women. Body Fat Percentage is calculated by three methods which are Bioelectric Impedance Analysis, by Calliper, by DEXA Scan.
